Climate & Preparedness

Situated just above 5,000 feet in elevation, Cody is remarkably mild for a mountain town, with over 200 days of sunshine annually. However, recreational users should be prepared for unpredictable weather any time of year.

TEMPERATURE RANGES & PRECIPITATION
• The average annual high in Cody is 59°F with an average low of 32°F. (Mountain temperatures are cooler.) Multiple summer days over 100 degrees are common, as are winter temperatures below zero. Snow can fall any month of the year.
• The area typically enjoys low humidity. Classified as high mountain desert, the region receives about nine inches of precipitation a year, yet in the high country flash flooding can be a hazard.

BE PREPARED
• Check the weather report.
• Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
• When you hit the trail, wear or bring clothing that will keep you warm and dry, even if the skies are clear. Synthetic or wool layers are better at wicking
moisture away from your body than cotton.
• Always carry proper provisions: plenty of water, maps, compass, first-aid kit, food, bear spray, rainwear, headlamp or flashlight, and other season or activity-specific gear.
