Recreating in Horse Country

The classic western mode of transportation — astride a trusty horse — continues to be popular in this part of the Cowboy State. Several lodges and private companies offer trail rides, horse rental and pack trips into the Shoshone backcountry. In addition, numerous trailheads line the North Fork and South Fork of the Shoshone River corridor with trailer parking, horse facilities and camping for do-it-yourself trail riding.
TRAIL ETIQUETTE
• Bikers and hikers should always yield to horses.
• Move off the trail several feet to a safe distance on the downhill side when encountering horses.
• Announce your presence by calmly greeting horse and rider.
• Leave gates as you found them (open or closed).
• Keep your pets leashed and under control.
WILD HORSES
Herds of wild horses roam the dry prairie of the McCullough Peaks east of Cody. Observe these remarkable animals from a distance of at least 500 feet. Approaching during foaling season (mid-April to mid-July) can result in foal abandonment. Never feed or attempt to attract horses to you. Many of the herds can be easily seen east of Cody from Highway 14/16/20.
