Just minutes from downtown, the Shoshone River canyon offers hundreds of easily accessible and good quality routes for beginner to advanced climbers. The majority of climbs are bolted although a few locations require traditional gear. Various guidebooks are available for additional information.
EAST BRIDGE BANDS – Heading west, this is the first climbing area in the canyon. The limestone face on the north side of the road features two dozen mostly sport routes (5.6 to 5.12).
BRIDGE BANDS – Further west, closer to the road tunnels, another 60 to 80 climbs range in difficulty from 5.6 to 5.12.

THE ISLAND – There are more than 30 routes along this granite intrusion just before the Buffalo Bill Dam. Climbs here range in difficulty from 5.6 to 5.12. Park on the east side of the tunnels and walk carefully through to the climbing area between the second and third tunnels.
MOOSE WALL– This 500-foot, south-facing wall boasts plenty of traditional climbing plus a few multi-pitch routes (5.5 to 5.11). The wall is below the highway in the lower canyon along the Shoshone River. Access this area by parking at the pull-out on the south side of the highway before the first tunnel and follow a trail to the road below. The climbing area is located above the fork in the road. Many of the rappels are 150 feet long on this wall and require two ropes.
Bouldering
Bouldering rocks are scattered throughout the area. Cedar and Rattlesnake mountains at the western gateway to Cody are two popular spots for bouldering.
